In February 2018, following a ten-year effort, Western Rivers Conservancy succeeded in creating a salmon sanctuary at Blue Creek, the most important cold-water tributary to California’s Klamath River when it conveyed 9,140 acres to the Yurok Tribe. In 2017, WRC acquired the final 8,582 acres in its effort to create the 47,000-acre Blue Creek Salmon Sanctuary and Yurok Tribal Community Forest. WRC brought its first carbon offsets to market in the fall of 2017, helping fund this historic project.
