Carmel River Before Restoration

Restoration Stories

Before restoration. In the fall of 2018, the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (District) constructed the Rancho San Carlos Bank Stabilization Project. This project was designed to protect this reach from further erosion, loss of mature riparian habitat, and the loss of culturally significant Santa Barbara Sedge beds used for basketry by the Rumsen Ohlone Native American community. The left bank experienced significant erosion during the winter of 2017. Much of the original streamside habitat of protective willows and cottonwoods were lost, leaving an exposed sand and gravel bank that was susceptible to future high flows. Learn More © MPWMD
