Mattole River Restoration III

Restoration Stories

The Whitethorn School draws water directly from the upper Mattole River. But the school, like the Whitethorn community, doesn’t want to harm fish habitat and populations in so doing. Trout Unlimited, which joined local conservation group Sanctuary Forest and other partners developed a collaborative water supply solution for the Whitethorn School as part of Sanctuary Forest’s “Tanks and Forbearance” campaign. A water tank system is built for the landowner to store water in the winter wet season, and in exchange the landowner agrees not to pump from the creek when streamflow falls below 0.7 cubic feet per second as measured at a stream gauge monitored by Sanctuary Forest. This helps keep flow from falling below critical levels young salmon and steelhead need to survive, and provides landowners with a secure supply of water. Learn More © Trout Unlimited
